I’m currently a 4th year intern at a VA and noticed all the techs here are capable of refracting (as long as no prism is needed). They will at least attempt refracting everyone. Works out well 95% of the time, some adjustments needed periodically but haven’t noticed anything major. As a student, frankly I love it. I feel like I get to focus on the medical side of things. I plan to work in a busy MD/OD office after graduation which has refracting techs already for MDs. I see no reason why I couldn’t do same as OD like they do here at VA. I’ll be paid based off of medical billing production and not optical so this is a consideration for my interest as well.
Curious if anyone works in an environment similar and has any thoughts on this?
