I’m currently working for an OD/MD group owned by private equity. There have been quite a few issues with the way upper management has been treating the doctors and staff when it comes to decision making and respecting our time. I’m starting to think I should job hunt before it gets worse.
I see all types of patients and was told upon hiring that I would have full flexibility with customizing my template. I asked to customize the appointment slots before lunch and at the very end of the day for follow ups and/or emergencies but this rarely gets followed. They have a corporate policy where “2 days before the appointment, if the spot is open then any type of appointment can be booked.” This means they are putting new patients and routine exams on my follow up/emergency slots. They also have a policy where we can’t deny late patients until 20 minutes have passed. If my day ends at 5 and my last 4:20 patient shows up at 4:40, has a brand new work up and is dilated, then usually it means I’m getting out after 5. This is especially true if the tech is slow. I spend time at home finishing charts. I see patients every 20 minutes if my patient shows up 20 min late their appointment is technically over.
I want to ask them if we can avoid scheduling RTN exams right before lunch and right at the end of the day but it seems like that’s not going to happen. Am I being reasonable for expecting this? At an old practice I worked for, this is how it was done. Contact lens follow ups, non dilated visits, other follow ups, etc were saved for right before lunch or right at end of day.
I have a lot of issues with the 2 day policy thing because why are routine exams being put on my follow up/emergency spots when there are plenty of other routine spots open on other days? Is this and a 20 minute late policy common?? I am happy with my current compensation but have a difficult time figuring out where to draw the line with upper management and am beginning to think this isn’t for me.
