My eyes have been aching for the last 3 weeks. It started out of nowhere. I have no other symptoms but this aching feeling that gets worse when I use my computer. USING MY PHONE DOES NOT AGGRAVATE IT. I occasionally have foreign body sensation, but this is rare and I know this is common with dry eye.
Three weeks ago I go to the first optho. She says I have mild dry eye and some drops and ointment will fix it. I try this out for two weeks and the drops don’t make this feeling better or worse and neither does the nighttime ointment. All preservative free. Literally NO RELIEF of the painful feeling in my eye from screen use. A week ago I visit a corneal specialist at an academic hospital. She also says it is is “mild” dry eye. I get restasis, FML 2x a day, and PF tears 4 times a day. It’s almost been a week and I still don’t feel better or worse.
Now here’s the WEIRD PART: I decided to randomly put on sunglasses yesterday while studying for my medical board exams on my laptop. I had NO eye pain with these sunglasses on. This seems to be the ONLY thing that has made it better and eliminate the pain I’m feeling.
Summary: 26 year old male presents with acute history of aching eyes and rare foreign body sensation. It is made better with wearing sunglasses on the computer. Steroids, PF drops, and ointment don’t make the pain better or worse. There are “dry spots” on his cornea. There is no MGD and schirmer test is 12 in both eyes with anesthesia.

I’m wondering if I have dry eye, but that’s not what is causing this pain. Because why do sunglasses get rid of the pain with the same blink rate on the computer? Also FML surely would have nipped this pain in the bud in 6 days. I’m not a severe case of dry eye.
