Change Is Inevitable; Make the Most of It

I’VE NEVER BEEN one to embrace change… though, I have come to accept that it is an inevitability and have forced myself to adopt the mentality that change can present new opportunities.

A couple of things have changed at INVISION since our last issue and these too I am looking at as chances for positive transformation.

Are you a good news first or bad news first sort of crowd?

I personally like to end on a high note, so first let me share a loss. INVISION lost its longtime National Sales Director, Mike Boucher, in June. Mike had been with the magazine since its launch — long before even me — and was integral to its finding the success it currently enjoys. In those early days, he was the single driving force propelling us forward. His departure was a blow but he will undoubtedly bring his patented charm to his new role at PentaVision. I wish him the best of luck. We all do.

His leaving left a hole to fill — a change that presents opportunity — so stay tuned for that exciting announcement.

In addition to that, we also welcomed a new voice to the editorial team. Jens Carlson joins INVISION in the newly created role of Digital Content Editor. He will be living and breathing the INVISION brand online on our website, socials and, eventually, our bulletins. He is a veteran digital journalist and it will be exciting to offer even more of the great content we produce online.

I think it’s fitting that in the issue where we highlight exceptional optical retailers who themselves were looking to challenge the status quo, create change, and explore new opportunities, we too are in a period of transformation. Be sure to read all the ways our America’s Finest Optical Retailers winners capitalized on change and opportunity to launch themselves into their own new adventures starting on page 30.

Change is disruptive. Change is scary. But change is inevitable and, when put into the correct perspective, it can unleash your imagination and widen your horizons.

Best wishes for your business,

Five Smart Tips From This Issue

  1. Do you have professional photographs of your business and team? Their uses are endless. (Manager’s To Do, page 16)
  2. Are you suggesting and creating task-specific lenses for your customers? It may be just the edge they’re looking for in their activities and hobbies. (Better Vision, page 26)
  3. Looking for feedback from others? Ask them what they perceive to be your blind spots. It may offer more useful insight. (Tip Sheet, page 52)
  4. Is your business in the habit of going the extra mile? It is an important “principle of success.” (Columns, page 60)
  5. If you’re finding it hard to retain good staff, perhaps it’s time to revisit your employee discounts. A generous policy could be just the ticket to maintain a happy team. (Buzz Session, page 64)
