Is myopia a disease?

It is a common vision condition that occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) has too much curvature. This leads to a situation where light entering the eye is focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it, resulting in distant objects appearing blurry while close objects can be seen more clearly.

Here's why myopia is not classified as a disease:

  1. Prevalence: Myopia is extremely common, affecting a significant portion of the global population. It often develops during childhood and can be easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery like LASIK.
  2. Non-Infectious: Unlike diseases, myopia is not caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites. It is primarily influenced by genetic factors and environmental factors like lifestyle and visual habits.
  3. Correctable: Myopia can typically be managed and corrected to restore clear vision. Glasses and contact lenses are common solutions, and these can help individuals with myopia lead normal lives without significant limitations.
  4. Non-Progressive in Many Cases: In some individuals, myopia stabilizes as they reach adulthood, and it may not progress significantly further. This contrasts with many diseases that tend to worsen over time if left untreated.

However, it's essential to note that while myopia itself is not a disease, high or progressive myopia can increase the risk of certain eye-related complications, including cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. These conditions can affect eye health and, if left untreated, may lead to vision impairment or loss. Therefore, it's important for individuals with myopia to have regular eye exams to monitor their eye health and address any potential issues promptly.

In summary, myopia is not a disease but a common vision condition caused by a refractive error. It can typically be managed and corrected, but it's important to monitor eye health and seek professional guidance to prevent or address potential complications associated with high or progressive myopia. Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining good vision and eye health. You can visit your nearby ASG Eye Hospitals in India for any eye related query.
